Who wants a stiff, frozen bum on a cold winter morning? No one. To answer the need of millions of cold bottoms across the planet, innovative thinkers came up with heated seats. Wonderful, right?  We thought so and decided to do a little checking into how it evolved and how it works. Read further to delve into the mysteries and magic of heated-bum technology.

And, the Award Goes to...

What genius deserves the award for creating one of the best inventions on the planet? We don't know. Several companies have been given the credit: General Motors, Saab, and Cadillac. Cadillac is touted as the inventing company with fans pointing to its 1965-1966 Cadillac de Ville as proof, but it was Robert Ballard, a General Motors employee, that was granted the first patent for heated seat technology in 1955. He applied in 1951, providing diagrams of a heating unit built that stretched the length of the bench, comprised of actual heating elements.

However, it is Saab that can definitively boast of the first electronic heated seats in the early 1970s. Ironically, according to Saab's site, they were trying to ease back pain, not reinvent the way cold passengers warmed up.

How is This Magic Achieved?

The technology is simple, being very similar to that of electric blankets. Wires are run through the blanket and heated by the electricity that's run through the cord. Heated seats rely on wiring embedded in the seat or heating coils under the seat. The wiring is powered by the car's battery and produces the current that creates the heat.

That's it. While the technology is simple, the effects are amazing. With a heat source directly under your body, you are able to warm up more quickly and stay comfortably warm as others are getting in and out of the car.
