Everyone's seen it: the car with the speakers that take up the entirety of its backseat. But that's far from necessary. You can get powerful sound in your vehicle that's quite unobtrusive, with the following options.

Get a "Stealth" System

Stealth audio systems are used to upgrade the factory system within your car.  These systems don't alter your dash in any way, and they are designed for a specific type of car. Stealth systems add a few speakers and subwoofers in discrete locations around your vehicle -- the subwoofer is often located by your passengers' feet. Not only is this system small and easy to install, but it's also a lot cheaper than upgrading the entire factory system. You also have the additional bonus of keeping your vehicle's original dashboard setup which -- depending on the vehicle -- could be important. The only downside to this type of system is that it is vehicle-specific, which means rarer vehicles may have a harder time finding one.

Mount Free Air Subs

If you don't want to lose trunk space, free air subs are the answer. Free air subs can be mounted in the rear deck of a vehicle -- and because they are free to air, they don't take up trunk space. Instead, the trunk space itself operates as an enclosure. Free air subs aren't recommended for use with very loud speaker systems, but for low-range and midrange sound systems they should be more than powerful enough. If you want a lot of sound, however, you may need to invest in an enclosed sub... in which case, keeping them in the trunk is still a viable option.

Get a Micro/Mini System

Micro/mini audio systems are specifically designed to provide power and high-tech features in a compact format. Though you're not going to get a car-shaking bass with a micro/mini system, you will get high-fidelity, clean audio -- in fact, it's the bass that ends up taking space in a vehicle. Most audiophiles will find a micro/mini system more than suitable, especially at the higher end of price.
