Subwoofers were first developed back in the 1960’s for home stereo systems. The ideas were to add bass to the system to fill out the sound. They became a popular addition to car audio systems in the 1980s due to the demand for a heavier bass sound while driving down the street. Although most people have heard of subwoofers, few people understand how they work or how to utilize them properly. We provide a brief explanation of subwoofers and how valuable they are to your audio system.

What is a Subwoofer?

A subwoofer (also known as a loudspeaker) produces low-end audio frequencies in the bass range. Musically speaking, they enhance the lower notes and fill out the sound in the lower ranges. Scientifically speaking, they push the frequency range between 20 and 200 Hz for standard car audio systems.

To simplify the concept, imagine that you are listening to your favorite rock, rap, or country band. While there’s no doubt they create well-produced dynamic music; the overall production does not ‘thump.’ It doesn’t sound full, particularly on the low end. A Subwoofer brings out the low end and fills out the sound. The result is that you hear more bass or drums in the music.

Speaker Mounting

We mount subwoofer speakers by encasing them in a wood box that is covered with black felt or similar material. By using this method, the sound is contained, and the speakers produce a thump. Believe it or not, the subwoofers are more effective encased in a box than they are wide open.

Do You Need Subwoofers in Your Car?

It depends. If you are listening to talk radio or NPR, then a subwoofer would be overkill. If you listen to jazz or classical, then a subwoofer could certainly help. If you are listening to popular music, i.e., rock, pop, rap, rock, R'n'B, etc., we recommend putting a subwoofer in your car. Since the early 2000s, subwoofers have become a standard component in almost all sound enhancement audio systems. For our customers or us, it’s hard to imagine a custom audio system without a subwoofer. It’s gone from being a novelty item to sounding natural.
